Introductory Course in Group Analysis

Wednesdays 5.30 to 9pm at Ida Darwin Hospital, (training block) Cambridge

The annual Introductory Course in Group Analysis is made up of two aspects:

Theory (seminars and lectures) &
Experience (
belonging to both small and median analytic groups).

The Course is linked to a national network of group-analytic trainings recognised by the Institute of Group Analysis, and so can be used as a stepping stone towards further training (and UK Council for Psychotherapy registration) at Centres in London, Bedford, Manchester and Glasgow.

The Course is also valuable in its own right for anyone working with groups, whether in the mental health field, social services, education, the voluntary sector or business, and whether the groups people work with are therapy groups, support groups, educational groups or staff groups. The Course offers relevant understanding for those responsible for running groups as part of their work, and for those who participate in groups at work.

Aims of the Course

1. To introduce participants to group analytic theory and practice.

2. To develop participants’ awareness and understanding of the power of group processes, particularly those arising from unconscious processes.

3. To develop self-exploration in the group setting.

4. To promote understanding of the usefulness of group analytic theory and practice in facilitating a wide range of groups.

Group Analysis

This approach to groups was started by the psychoanalyst S H Foulkes in the 1940’s, and further developed at the Institute of Group Analysis. Its theory has roots in psychoanalysis, systems theory and sociology. It involves the natural interaction of people as social beings solving problems together, where everyone has an equal voice to reflect on what is going on together.

The best way to understand groups is to be part of one.
